Improving Inclusive Middle School Science Teachers’ Vocabulary Instruction: A Multimedia Professional Development Process

Students with disabilities are usually included within rigorous content area courses and therefore receive instruction from general education teachers. Although inclusion is net positive, instruction is often not a match for how students with disabilities learn. We introduce an IES-sponsored multimedia-based professional development process to support middle school science teachers' vocabulary instruction. The three pronged PD process includes instructional modeling videos, customizable vocabulary lessons, and data-driven feedback and coaching. Each component reflects principles of UDL. Results of three experimental trials with teacher and student outcomes will be shared as evidence of effectiveness.
