As educators, it is our responsibility to inspire students to become experts at learning. With an achievement gap that still exists, we must look at all students and their strengths as agents of much-needed change. In UDL, we have a framework to make that happen. As CAST defines, expert learners are purposeful & motivated, knowledgeable & resourceful, and strategic & goal-oriented. These qualities transcend age, education level, ability, or disability. In a universally designed learning environment, expert learners can be vulnerable in their weaknesses and have courage to try multiple paths until they find options that lead to success.
